Sri Lanka's 1,600km coastline offers diverse beach experiences - from palm-fringed tropical paradises to surfing hotspots. The surrounding waters host blue whales (largest animals on Earth), dolphins, and vibrant coral reefs. Two monsoons mean one coast is always calm.

Mirissa Beach

Premier whale watching destination where blue whales migrate close to shore November-April. Over 95% sighting success rate in season. Also excellent for surfing (beginners to intermediate), sunset viewing from Parrot Rock, and nightlife. Secret Beach nearby offers secluded swimming.

Unawatuna Beach

Sheltered crescent bay with calm turquoise waters, consistently ranked among world's best beaches. Protected by reef - excellent for swimming year-round. Japanese Peace Pagoda on headland. Coral reef offshore for snorkeling. Vibrant restaurant and bar scene.

World-renowned surfing destination on east coast, ranked among top 10 surf spots globally. Main Point offers perfect right-hand break April-October. Laid-back traveler vibe with beachfront cafes. Nearby lagoon safaris at Pottuvil Lagoon for crocodiles and birds.

Trincomalee Beaches

Pristine east coast beaches including Nilaveli (postcard-perfect white sand, 4km long) and Uppuveli (more developed with restaurants). Pigeon Island nearby for snorkeling with reef sharks and turtles. Natural hot springs at Kanniya. Ancient Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock.

Bentota Beach

Popular resort beach on southwest coast with excellent water sports infrastructure. Jet skiing, banana boats, windsurfing, parasailing, and diving available. Bentota River offers boat safaris through mangroves to see crocodiles and monitor lizards. Turtle hatcheries nearby at Kosgoda.

Hikkaduwa Beach

Coral sanctuary with colorful reef fish visible from glass-bottom boats. Sri Lanka's first marine sanctuary (1979). Excellent snorkeling and diving directly from beach. Known for sea turtles that swim close to shore. Lively surf scene and backpacker nightlife.

Tangalle Beach

Less developed stretch of golden sand with dramatic rocky headlands. Important sea turtle nesting site (November-April) - five species nest here. Secluded bays and coves. Strong waves for experienced surfers. Nearby Mulkirigala rock temple worth visiting.

Kalpitiya Peninsula

Dolphin watching hotspot with pods of 500-1000+ spinner dolphins. Excellent kitesurfing destination (May-October) with consistent winds. Whale watching (November-March). Multiple islands including Alankuda and Dutch Bay. Largely undeveloped with eco-lodges.

Popular beach town just 7km from Colombo airport - convenient first/last night destination. Long sandy beach, though water can be murky. Dutch Canal for boat trips. Famous fish market (Lellama) - one of Sri Lanka's largest. Good seafood restaurants.
